February 3, 2018 | Paul Ryer 10 Little Outlaws Cumberland Rhode Island, January 27, 2018 – Ok, Outlaws aren’t little, but 10 of them made the trip to Ron DeRoche’s Rolling Thunder Raceway. Some folks battled black ice on the trip. Bill “The Store” Craven and The Scribe had smooth sailing on the short hop from Massachusetts. Coffee and munchkins were the reward as well some fast racing on the track designed and built by Ron. On the menu for the day was Indy, Super Stock, and Magnatraction with Sports Prototype bodies. Bring the horsepower or get left in thbe back of the field. After 2 hours of practice the field was ready. Recovering magnet racer Tom Gray took Best appearing honors at his fist Outlaws race. A great introduction to the club. First up was Indy. The cars were flying around the track. Key was hitting your brake points with these coasty cars. Big lap length led to close lap totals, but Dave was almost 2 laps ahead of the field and posted the most laps in a heat with 15. Second went to Greg W who was closely followed by Rudy in third. Ron and Butch used some home track knowledge to finish in the middle of the pack. Sir Scribe was next followed by Tom Gray who had a good showing in his first Outlaw race. Mikey, Oh Jimmy, and Bill finished out the field. A mixture of Aurora and DASH armatures powered the cars to some fast laps around the big track. A big track to really open them up on. Dave and Greg had their own race for the top 2 spots with Dave taking down the win in a rocket ship and posting a heat high total of 19 laps. After that the field bunched up with Mike in third followed by Ron, Paul, and Rudy separated by sections. Jimmy came across the line next followed by Butch and Tom who were separated by section. Bill wrapped up the field. As usual the track was quiet as Outlaws fueled up for the Magnatraction race. Homemade soup and sandwiches were the bill of fare for the day. The soup was outstanding! Thanks to Mrs. Rolling Thunder for making a big crock pot for us to enjoy. I don’t think we left much when everyone was done! The final race of the day was Magnatraction with Sports Prototype bodies. Porsche 917s and Ferrari 512s took to the track. Unfortunately, Greg, Mike and Butch had to leave so then there were 7. These cars are fantastic on this track. A guest appearance, in the form of a car, came from across the pond in England. Clive Mills, whose club also races Magnatraction cars, had seen the Outlaws website and wanted to see how one of his cars would stack up against the field of Outlaws. Dave Lockwood, lent his wicked fast magnatraction to Ron and volunteered to pilot Clive’s car (You got a great draw on the driver Clive!). This time Sir Scribe took down the field with the rebuilt rocket that went up in smoke on the Shamrock Glen. Its back and its fast setting high heat total of 21 laps in yellow. Ron drove a great race to finish in second landing him on the podium for the first time on Outlaws. Great job Ron! Dave drove Clive’s car to the final podium spot. Great drive by Dave who didn’t practice with the car, but found it to be very smooth and drivable. Nice job Clive! Tom edged Jimmy by sections for fourth and Rudy and Bill completed the field with Bill struggling in yellow. Thanks to everyone who made the trip out to the Rolling Thunder Raceway. We’ll see at LenJet February 17 to race Grand National, Indy and Super Stock.
